In my previous writings I have established that to survive the first year of your startup you have to experiment with many positions and segments to find your PMF.
But how do you even get to that?
How do you even come up with all those positions and segments to test to begin with?
Creativity.
To be in this Business you NEED to be creative.
You have to come up with new ideas and angles constantly since it IS a game of iteration & experiments.
There are numerous pivots to be made and alot of ideas & projects to abandon in favor of new ones.
And that is a privilege, only possible if you have the capacity to generate new ones.
You cannot baby a single idea or get attached to it and always have to come up with new ones.
There is a reason why Edward De Bono was cherished the most by the business community than anyone else
“Creativity is the most important human resource of all. Without creativity, there would be no progress, and we would be forever repeating the same patterns. In business, creativity leads to new products, new markets, and competitive advantage.” – Edward De Bono
If I have learnt anything it is that Constraints beget creativity.
Artificially limit resources, challenge yourself to position for an unexpected segment, introduce constraints that will lead to outputs different than current ones.
Consume disruptive inputs (e.g., niche subreddits, failed Kickstarters, patent filings, Weird product reviews, pitch decks from shut-down startups).
You have to indulge in strategic reading and constraints to help yourself because everyone runs out of ideas very quickly.
There are many who would fail even with resources because this process is missing in their modus operandi.
Resources support and Capital funds the ideas and teams and the ideas are a derivative of the team.
A team without the muscle to generate ideas is in for a tough time.
A team without creativity is in for a tough time.
One can only imagine the hopelessness that creeps in when one is experiencing a lack of ideas in face of adversities.
Don’t let yourself be in that position. Work on your creativity.
It helps in something as big and broad as vision to something as miniscule to
whitespaces in your writing.
