In Praise of Irony

Humans are ironic creatures because there is something that we want always, but most of the time what we do is what will get us something else we are walking contradictions The concept of irony is deeply ingrained in human psyche because no matter how much someone tries to run away from it they do realize what is happening. The dissonance is not lost on anyone.

And that is what makes irony such a great medium of exchanging ideas or persuading someone in sales most of the time what you have to do is convince someone that whatever they are doing right now is not enough not sufficient or whatever and then you can pitch in your little offer but the first step is to making someone aware about the irony of what they want and what they have.

Another thing is you might be really inclined to explain something rationally our whole lives we have participated in exams that want us to be rational logical and give the most methodic answer and to create something that convinces someone because it is logical is really hard i have tried to make ai related videos where i was explaining something by making the complex very intuitive and the amount of effort it takes to simplify the complex is almost as much as turning copper into gold I won’t recommend it to anyone so if that is your persuasion strategy that hey you should buy our product because we’re good at this we’re good at that blah blah blah then you are just using your reflexes from the exam system at this point you don’t have to be so rational maybe the non-linear the disruptive way is the way to explore.

You might try to explain your point really really rationally or convincingly but even though it is correct a lot of times it might not be accepted but you know how many times someone else got into your head because they say something mean even though it is completely false but how many times did the well-meant study tips from your nice teacher or friend got inside your head well that’s just how it is the yield on well-constructed rhetoric is not very high the nonlinear and the disruptive things that just turn on three four light bulbs at once shake you up.

And irony is one of those things. It is also humorous. One of the why it is audience enjoying thing is humor. It can transcend languages and cultures. I bet your well-constructed copy won’t.

So irony can give you the disruption you need to start persuasion irony is something that can be easily understood and it is low effort and higher yield than trying to make the complex simple another burden of trying to make the complex simple or intuitive is that you have to get the nuance but irony is something where you are tapping into the imagination of the person himself to get it rolling you don’t have to give them all the pieces like you have to do when you are trying to make something intuitive you don’t have to establish any context chain just like people can talk shit about anything they can be ironic about anything turning anything into ironic is a human experience.

Your rational explanations will have the burden of carrying the whole contextual irony will not have to do that and that lightness of its being helps you to insert it into mass communications and target more people with more efficacy.

For example if you have some drink to sell you can target the irony that hey you are going for some artificial sweetener for the zero calorie effect but that sweetener might cause you gut issues but our drink doesn’t and it is also zero sugar so hey hop on

Highlighting irony and then persuading or just highlighting irony for the sake of engagement can be done.

So instead of:

complexity → simplification → understanding → relevance → persuasion

you can sometimes go:

irony → curiosity → persuasion

Rational communication often behaves as though persuasion is a grading problem: present all premises, show working, arrive at conclusion. But mass communication is closer to ignition. You don’t necessarily want to transmit a perfectly reconstructed model. You want to activate enough existing associations that the person’s own brain begins doing work for you. Irony is cheap persuasion because it outsources reasoning to the audience instead of you transporting all the context to them yourself via the noisy channels of communication.

A rational explanation says: “I will construct the model inside your head.”

Irony says: “You already have 80% of the model. I’ll transmit the contradiction and make you assemble the remaining 20%.”

Do not ask how simply you can explain the whole argument. First ask how little of the argument you actually need to transmit.

Ask yourself, when you scroll to Instagram, how much of the content is just humor. Humor, travel, and thirst traps. These are highly- wide markets. Using irony to tap into humor will do wonders for you.

Plus I just understand that everybody knows the meaning of too little or too much of something everybody understand too little flavouring and too much flavouring but mastery is in the middle where the perfect amount right and all what the explanations go for is the middle where they are trying to find that same ground but what majority understands is having too little or too much of something so I guess if not irony we can go for this upper-under effect

We know too little prep or too much prep is bad we know too little confidence or too much confidence is bad we know too little sleep and too much sleep is bad. We know how to identify when something is oddly off but to get a sense of when it is perfect and to get it perfect it is really hard thing and you will lose a lot of people as you narrow down the range to just getting it to the middle ground
